Brihadisvara Temple, Tanjore
|
When we planned our holidays to Tanjore, I had no idea what I would be witnessing!!! All I was excited about was that I would own an Authentic Tanjore painting that I have always been wanting since I had studied about this Art!
As we were nearing our destination, we started seeing the gopurams of temples. We planned to visit the Brihadisvara Temple that evening. It was a brilliant sight. Brihadisvara Temple is one of the largest temples in South India and is built in Dravidian Style. The architecture is exemplary. The temple is said to have one of the biggest corridors of the Chola dynasty. The temple walls adorn beautiful frescos, sculptures, architectural carvings - depicting mythology.
These were a lot of cultural activities and live Bharatnatyam performances by various artists. The whole ambiance was filled with richness in art and culture, that one gets mesmerized by the majestic structure in front and forgets about the distance traveled!!
We visited many marvels in Tanjore. Each temple was beautiful in its own way. The 1000 pillar hall was another spectacular architecture. To my experience, Tanjore is filled with richness in history….And takes one back to an imaginative land, as to how the kings and queens lived their life in this period!! I would always want to go back to Tanjore, and absorb all the beauty and imagine how it would have been while the sculptors, artists, and architectures built the empire!!
