Walls at Belur |
When one visits Belur and Halebidu, the intricate architecture is indescribable . It is said that Belur is beautiful outside and stands out with a lot of mythological stories, Halebid has beautiful carvings on the inside of the temple.
Belur and Halebid belonged to the Hoysala Empire. The folklore says that Sala - a young King Vishnuvardhana was instructed by his guru, to kill a tiger, saying ‘hoy’, which translated in Hale Kannada [Old Kannada dialect] means Kill. Hence Hoysala came into existence and is also the emblem of the Chola Dynasty.
